17 Apr A DIY Mother’s Day
“Mother is the name for God in the lips and hearts of little children.” – William Makepeace Thackeray
Mothers are pretty amazing – I’m sure we can all agree. So, how can we truly express our gratitude to the incredible women who’ve taken on one of the toughest jobs around? The answer is we can’t. But don’t let that discourage you; there are many ways for us to get incredibly close, and Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity!
Gift vouchers, floral bouquets, and brunch all sound lovely, but if you want to give your mama a gift from the heart, consider rolling your sleeves up and making her something unique. Thankfully, most of us have graduated from pasta art and finger paintings, so we can make something really beautiful that our mothers will treasure.
A Spin on Flowers
As pretty as they are, flowers don’t last long. Why not give a gift that’ll keep blooming? Instead of a traditional bouquet, try making a pansy or purslane planter – perfect for your mom if she enjoys cooking. These edible flowers look beautiful on a plate and also have some great health benefits!
DIY Flower Planter:
- Grab a small tray or bowl.
- Fill it with potting soil.
- Plant edible flowers or hardy succulents (which last much longer than cut flowers).
- For added creativity, upcycle an old bowl or container for a charming, earth-friendly planter!
Not Your Regular Pillow
If we know anything about women, it’s that they generally love a creative assortment of scatter cushions. Whether they’re lounging on a bed, decorating the couch, or setting up a cosy reading nook, pillow scaping is an art form. Take your mother’s love of upholstery to the next level. Make her a cuddle cushion out of your embrace so she can snuggle up to your proxy when she misses you.
DIY Cuddle Cushion:
- Grab a pillow cover and a soft pillow insert.
- If you’re feeling creative, you can sew a simple heart-shaped cushion that represents your embrace, or even create a design that’s personal to you both.
- For that extra special touch, use fabric paint or embroidery to add a meaningful message – something simple like “I love you” or a heartfelt phrase.
Compile a Pamper Pack
Being a mother is a tireless job that never ends. Between all the late-night phone calls, impromptu babysitting requests, and surprise baked goods, your mom might find the time for a relaxing bath. This is your chance to show her you care about her R&R time.
DIY Bath Bombs:
What You’ll Need:
Baking soda, Citric acid, Cornstarch, Epsom salts, Essential oils (like lavender or chamomile), A mould (silicone moulds work best)
How-to:
- In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of citric acid, 1/2 cup of cornstarch, and 1/2 cup of Epsom salts.
- Slowly add around 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oils.
- Slowly spritz the mixture with water while stirring continuously, just enough to make it hold together when squeezed (don’t make it too wet or it will fizz prematurely).
- Press the mixture firmly into your bath bomb mould.
- Let the bath bombs dry for a few hours (or overnight) until they’re hard.
- Once set, pop them out of the moulds and place them into a cute jar or wrap them with pretty string.
Alternative: If bath bombs sound tricky, try making bath salts instead! Simply mix Epsom salts with essential oils and dried flowers for a relaxing spoil.
DIY Coconut Sugar Scrub:
What You’ll Need:
- 1 cup of brown sugar
- 1/2 cup of coconut oil
- 10-15 drops of essential oils (like lavender or peppermint)
- A small jar to store the scrub
How-to:
- In a bowl, mix 1 cup of sugar with 1/2 cup of coconut oil.
- Add 10-15 drops of your favourite essential oils.
- Mix everything until well combined.
- Transfer the scrub into a small jar and label it with a cute note!
Upcycle with Love
Eco-conscious moms will love a gift that’s both creative and environmentally friendly. Upcycling old items into something new can be incredibly thoughtful and practical.
DIY Mason Jar Vase:
- Take an old mason jar and give it a fresh coat of pastel paint.
- Add a family photo to the front (either print the jar or insert it in a mini frame).
- Fill it with fresh flowers or indoor plants.
A thoughtful Mother’s Day gift isn’t about the price tag or perfection, but the love and thought you put into it. Whether it’s a DIY planter, a cuddle cushion, or a pamper pack, these personal touches will show your mom just how much she means to you. After all, the best gifts come from the heart – and that’s something no store-bought item can match.
