09 Feb Get Smooth with Natural Hair Removal Recipes
We all love the feeling of silky-smooth skin; and getting that beautiful look shouldn’t require ugly chemicals. Ordinary hair removal products, like waxes, bleaches and creams, are just loaded with harsh synthetic chemicals that sink into your skin and straight into your bloodstream. And in addition to being bad to you, they’re also bad for the environment, as those chemicals wash down the drain and into our waterways. So while these products are all-round bad news, our green team has some really good news for you; there is a natural hair removal alternative! Our organic waxes are ultra-gentle on your skin, and kind to the environment. What’s more, if you’re fond of DIY beauty tricks, you can even whip up your very own natural wax at home.
There are so many benefits to using a natural hair removal product. There’s less risk of irritation and inflammation, so you won’t be left with rashes or red bumps all over your freshly waxed legs! There’s also less risk of ingrown hairs, and of course it’s free of the chemicals you want to keep out of your system – and out of your eco-system too.
Try out one of these natural hair removal recipes, and your skin will feel the difference:
Papaya Paste for Sensitive Skin
Papain, an enzyme found in the papaya fruit, is actually able to break down the hair follicle and inhibit hair growth. This paste helps to make fine hair less noticeable, and also works to gently exfoliate your skin. Turmeric has been used since ancient times to slow hair growth; plus it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and adds a healthy glow to your skin.
This recipe is ideal for fine or fair hair and facial hair, as well as those with sensitive skins.
NB: Make sure you use a small amount of pure organic turmeric, or you might end up staining patches of your skin bright yellow!
What You Need:
- 1-2Tbsp raw papaya, peeled & mashed
- ½tsp turmeric powder
What To Do:
- Mix turmeric powder with this raw papaya paste.
- Massage your skin with this paste for about 15 minutes.
- Wash off with lukewarm water.
- Do this once or twice a week.
Did You Know? A few dietary tricks can keep hair growth in check.
An imbalance of the hormone known as androgen can cause excessive unwanted hair growth. There are two easy ways you can keep unwanted hair at bay – with your diet! Firstly, spearmint tea helps to keep androgens down to an optimum level – so have a cup a day. Secondly, foods rich in phytoestrogen can help to boost oestrogen levels and prevent them dropping lower in relation to androgen levels. Examples of these foods include: flax seeds, fennel, licorice, tofu and gotu kola.
Sugar Lemon Body Wax
The granular mixture of sugar and water acts as an excellent exfoliating agent. Meanwhile lemon juice acts as an astringent and also naturally lightens the colour of unwanted hair, making it less noticeable. Honey adds stickiness to the mixture so it can grip the hair; it’s also a natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredient.
This recipe is suitable for the thicker, darker hair on the legs and arms. Be warned, like all waxing treatments, it may hurt a bit – but without the harsh chemicals found in ordinary waxes, this natural hair removal blend won’t irritate or damage your skin.
What You Need:
- 2Tbsp organic sugar
- 2Tbsp filtered water
- 2tsp raw honey
- 2tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 2-3tsp cornstarch or plain flour
- Cloth waxing strips
- Heat-proof container
- Waxing spatula
What To Do:
- Heat the ingredients in the microwave or over the stove in a double boiler; then mix well to make a smooth paste. (Microwave time: approx. 3 minutes.)
- Add a little more water if the paste is too thick.
Let the mixture cool down; it should still be warm but not too hot for you to touch. - Dust the area you want to wax with a little flour or corn starch.
- Using your waxing spatula, spread a thin layer of sugar wax over your dusted skin, in the direction of your hair growth. Immediately cover the area with a waxing strip & press it down.
- Hold your skin taut and pull the strip off, in the opposite direction of the hair growth.
