Dr Vanessa’s Summer Skincare Guide

Our skin is always changing – so our needs should too, with the season.

We caught up with expert dermatologist, Dr Vanessa from TASH360 to find out what products you need for your skincare routine this summer.

1. Sunscreen.

Sunshine can feel soooo good but can cause so much harm. Avoid the unglamorous sun ABC’s…Ageing, Burning and Cancer…by being vigilant with applying your SPF. Apply it daily, reapply it 4 hourly and apply it in an adequate amounts (ie half a teaspoon for your face and neck). The best sunscreen is the one which you will actually use but my top picks are mineral sunscreens containing non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

Try These:

2. Antioxidants.

The theme for summer skincare is that of DEFENSE so ‘up the ante’ and protect your skin from free radical damage while boosting your SPF with antioxidants such as resveratrol, Vitamin C, E, ferulic acid, niacinamide or green tea. Some – Vit E and Ferulic acid for example, while powerful on their own, become even more potent in combination with Vitamin C. This is why many serums boast a cocktail of antioxidants. So if your cream reads like the menu at a smoothie stand, that’s a good thing.

Try These:

3. Don’t forget to still moisturise.

Sweating, chlorine and air-conditioning dry out the skin while heat and humidity stimulate our oil glands to produce more oil leading to breakouts. Summer moisturising is a fine balance achieved by switching out your rich, occlusive moisturiser for humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin followed by a lightweight water- or gel-based moisturiser.

Try These:

4. Make cleansing a non-negotiable.

Besides make-up, think of all the sweat and greasy sunscreen clinging to your skin and promoting dehydration, inflammation and irritation. Unless you’re looking for clogged pores, breakouts, a sluggish cell turnover cycle and a damaged skin barrier – make cleansing your face before you collapse into bed an absolute golden rule. Look for a cleanser which doesn’t have harsh surfactants (like SLS, SLES) which can’t distinguish dirt and sebum from our much-needed fatty acids and lipids in our skin and which strips our skin barrier. Double cleanse to lift away the oil and dirt from the day.

Try These:

P.S. Don’t forget to look out for the Clean Beauty Seal if you’re ever browsing for new skincare essentials.  You can use this standard to guide your ethical journey with kinder ingredients, certified cruelty free, and no palm oil.
