27 Jun Top Reasons to Choose Organic Wine
We’re so proud and excited about the latest addition to our ever-growing list of categories – a range of proudly South African organic wines from trusted local organic vineyards. Red, white or rose, from special celebrations to everyday sipping, we’ve got a wine for every occasion. But what exactly makes organic wine better for you and for the planet?
Toxin-Free
Organic grapes are grown without the use of insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and chemical fertilisers. Instead, farmers use more natural “low-tech” techniques, such as planting herbs that attract the natural predators of the pests that threaten their vines. That means those nasty chemical toxins don’t end up seeping into our precious soils and groundwater – and they don’t end up in your glass either.
Water-Wise
Some organic vineyards use drip irrigation to water their vines; a system that releases water in a slow trickle rather than a spray. Others don’t use any form of irrigation, and instead simply allow seasonal rainfalls to water their crops. This is much more sustainable than conventional forms of agricultural irrigation, which use large amounts of precious water.
Low in Sulfites
Sulfites are naturally present in all fermented wines, but ordinary wines contain added sulphites as a preservative, while organic wines do not. Sulfites in wine are largely responsible for the headache and feelings of nausea that come with a hangover the day after drinking. Some of us even have sulphite sensitivities or allergies. Non-organic wines typically contains around eight times the amount of sulfites found in non-organic wine; simply put, low-sulfite wines are better for your body and your wellbeing.
High in Antioxidants
Resveratrol, an antioxidant compound found in red grapes, has numerous health benefits such as lowering cholesterol levels and preventing cell oxidation. Grapes sprayed with fungicides and chemicals used in conventional vineyards typically have a whopping 80% less resveratrol than organically grown grapes! Clearly organically produced red wines are far more likely to help you enjoy the heart-healthy benefits of this powerful antioxidant.
Supporting Sustainability
By buying organic wine, you’re essentially voting with your money and supporting organic farming over conventional farming. The more we support the organic industry, the more organic producers will be able to thrive – which is good news for us and for our mother Earth.
